State Senator Kathryn Bowers of Memphis, who is awaiting trial on federal corruption charges, said today she is resigning from the General Assembly. Because she 'resigned' before she was convicted, she keeps her pension for life.
Shelby County Commissioner Michael Hooks Sr. will likely be eligible for a county pension when he leaves office, despite an expected guilty plea to public corruption in connection with the FBI's Tennessee Waltz investigation.
Hooks could take early retirement and collect a county pension worth an estimated $1,426 a month for life, according to figures provided by the county.

Michael Hooks Jr. did “knowingly combine, conspire and agree with Timothy Willis and Darrel Catron to commit an offense against the United States, that is, to embezzle, steal, obtain by fraud and otherwise without authority knowingly convert to the use of another person to intentionally misapply property that was valued at $5,000 or more, and was owned by or under the care custody or control of the Juvenile Court Clerk’s Office of Shelby County, TN.â€
