The problem isn't the heat in september it is the "intellectially challenged" owners that are the problem. If you have a retriver that is a true "hunting" retriever then you train early in the mornin and late in the afternoon and your retriever is CONDITIONED to work in hot temps. Not the entire day but enough to pick up 15 birds if done early in the am or late in the pm. I see it every dove season. There are always people who have a lab that they claim is a good retriver that hasn't been out of the back yard or off the couch all year and after the first retrieve the dog is dying put the owner presses on till the dog just about has a heat stroke. Then they wonder why. Smart dog owners think about safety of there dogs first and know when enough is enough it is the everyday dog owners you have to look out for cause a good lab just don't know when to quit.

I have not trained much lately due to the heat. When we went last week I threw a bag of ice in each dogs kennel. We ran short sessions and kenneled dogs when not running. It seemed to help and I plan on doing the same opening morning in the field. I will be hunting with a few people without dogs, so I will take two and rotate them. Good luck and be safe
