Never kept a long term average, least not on doves...Sat. afternoon I didn't feel like I shot too well and killed a limit with a bit under 2 boxes...course shootin' a O/U it takes a little longer to go thru shells than with my auto...

Heck though my father in law killed 7 birds in his first 9 shots shootin' a .410  maybe that's why I didn't feel like I shot too well...but it did take him almost 2 boxes to shoot a limit...

Well, you've gotta factor in the majority of hunters that go buy those $30/case shells at wally world with the lowest powder and shot available........and then over extend their range and skybust every bird that comes by, and most are happy to get 3 birds a box. Most dove hunters want to shoot as much as possible and don't care how many shells it takes to fill a limit.

I buy heavy loads, and won't use anything else. For $5 a box I can get some of the best loads made today, and average close to a limit per box of shells. When the birds start trying to bypass me and hitting the corners, I can reach out and call 1800 collect.

GH22 I bet that # is pretty close. I remember hearing somewhere that the average duck hunter shoots 7 shells for each bird harvested. Don't know if that is correct, could have been one of those "they said" pieces of info.

GH22...you hit the nail on the head...folks shoot at birds they'd need a howitzer to take down, if you watch a good wingshooter (and I don't claim to be one) they'll pick their shots carefully....
