Decoy's, Weights, and tangleing

Postby missed mallards » Thu Aug 25, 2005 7:24 pm

What type of weight's do you use and how do you keep them from tangeling when you place them in your decoy bag.

I've used the Avery decoy set. The line break's and the weights broke many time's last year and i was wondering what other methods of rigging them do ya'll use. Also i'll be hunting in water from 6" to about 8-10' any help on rigging them would be much appreciated. thanks.

I've got a 5 gallon bucket full of tire weights and was just thinking of useing a cupcake plate to make some. how would i do that? sorry for the questions just need to know. thanks again.

I use the same decoys for timber and the river with modern cords and neck weights. There is 25 feet of cord on the decoys. I use a 1/2 inch wide rubber band on the keel. Just let out the amount of line you need, then secure with the rubber band. Works great and keeps tangles to a bare minimum.

When you get the duck hunting sickness really bad, you'll have several sets of decoys rigged differently for every possible situation.

G&H Supermags, weighted keels with full strap weights and 30' of tarred seine twine.

About two dozen water keel Magnums with 1/2 weights and 12' of twine.

Then a bag of ten, maybe twelve, regular size water keels with little bitty weights and 2 feet of twine, in a comfortable to backpack decoy bag.

Then a bag of godawful wood duck decoys, leaking pintail decoys, and all the dark gray no paint trashed decoys you have. Pitch these out in the other location you don't want the next boat load of sporting chaps to stop at.
Them ducks is wary. We now resume our regularly scheduled forum melee in progress.
