Wingman,

I have something like you are wanting to do at this time. Can not tell you yet how it is going to work. This is my first year to do it. I have 14 acers of millet, 14 acers of sunflower, and 9 acers of corn planted. All looks good and the corn is starting to dry out now. Did not get the corn in the ground to late May. People have told me about the same thing that Judge JB has said also. We will find out this year. Started cutting my millet last week and we have birds starting to show up now. Will not start cutting the sunflower until after first split for the second split. We only have about a 8 day first split and we have alway just cut out the millet and done really well. Next year I think that I am going to plant all of the millet areas in Sunflower, but will try to get them in the ground in the middle of April to have them ready early to start cutting. If the corn is really good I think that I might plant some more next year . Will let you know when I start cutting it down. Have alot of Barn yard grass that also in the corn rows it looks like it is going to be really good.

Eastwoods, don't think for a minute that corn is protected from black birds until you cut it down. Those bastards will peel the husk back just as efficiently as a mallard, and clean a field out before you can flood it for the ducks!

Wing Man, I am sold on sunflowers.....early and late. I planted my last ones on June 17 and they are still a little green and actually on Sunday, September 18, there were still a few yellow flowers left. Perfect for the October 8 opening of the 2nd season! I know this field won't last into the 3rd season, but late planted sunflowers should do very nicely for the 2nd season.
