I have taught the dog to sit, stay, lie down, retrieve as well as, house broken and even to ring a bell when she has to go out and and the doggy door is not available. But that is as far as my expertice goes. And by the way I do not live in a dorm or an apartment, I am a graduate student working on my doctorate. Therefore, I own a townhouse with a fenced in backyard. The dog comes and goes as she wishes through a dog door. She was rather easy to train therefore making me think that she is rather smart. However, I just do not have the know how. I have some money placed aside for the training, but not thousands. That is why I am asking, for a trainer that is educated in the study, to train my dog.
Make sure you know that facts before you make a mistake. It just makes you look ignorant! But then again some people never learn.

While there may be a ton of satisfaction in doing it yourself, you'd be better served in your postion having basics done professionally by a compent pro in your area. In your area has the advatange you can probably spend some time on the weekends throwing birds and whutnot while hes got your dog, and get kinda going. While your dog is there, buy smartworks books and read them, and visit fourms like this to kinda understand the flow. With basics done properly, anyone smart enough to be in graduate school can defiently take it from there with a program like smartworks.
First time around, without hands on help, and limited time, your dog will suffer your misteaks, and your end product wont be what your dreaming of now. Everyone ought to start with a well bred healthy dog, that a compentent pro did basics on, for their first dog... be amazed how much smoother things will go and how much progress you'll make even with your schedual.
Dont mind trey. Hes bitchy this week. bwhahahaha. Good luck. travis

you get what you pay for in dog training. mostly though 400 a month is about average. i checked on it and couldn't come up with the funds so i tryed to train him myself. it's twice the fun and three times the headache. dog's ain't cheap in the first place. i wish i would have known that a long time ago but hey you live and learn.
BTW i do what i can for my dog with limited funds. no he's no field trial dog but hunter and friend 2nd to none.
find a pro in your area that has a good heart and work him with the pro. it sure is nice to see the dog's comeing back from the pros, there are trained well.
my advice would be to watch the trainer first. some are just sorry. i had one i was going to send mine to but after watching him in the field one day i decieded i could do that myself. he liked the e-collar way to much. thats just my .02 so have fun and make the best of whatever you decied.
