Spray with Diquat or Sonar. It will die and sink.

I'm having the same problem with a hole that had been very good the last couple of years. This year the hole has not produced squat. The biggest difference this year is the amount of duckweed ----so much that if the wind is not blowing significantly, then the duck weed covers the entire water with a thick green mat, leaving no open water ---decoys will not move in that stuff. In previous years, there was plenty of duck weed in the hole, but not this much. I have noticed that the ducks generally do not like to land in this stuff, but will swim up into it.

I have heard of several others complaining about the extreme levels of duck weed in their duck holes as well. Does anyone know why the duckweed is so prominent this year? Will it die naturally with a good summer drawdown? Is intervention with some type of weed killer going to be necessary to get it under control?

Will the spray work in cold temperature? Everything I've seen say water temp should be above 70.

BTW: I realize ducks will light in duckweed. My problem is the duckweed is where my blind is, and the open spots a few hundred yards away are (now for the first time) more attractive.

Where do you buy this chemical? and what time of year is spraying it most effective? What is optimal water temp??

How long does it take to kill it after it is sprayed?? I need to do this today. I have a hole that is being effected by it as well. They will land in it, and I am not sure that they don't eat it occasionally. They are spooky acting when you decoys are locked up solid in the stuff, and you kill about half what you should. This is based on many years of watching the ducks in the same hole. They just act funny, but they will land in it. Any help would be appreciated.

I use it in the fall. I'm not sure if it will work in the winter months. Usually the freeze will kill off the duck weed and it will sink but I've noticed this year that the freeze has had no effect on it. It seems to be hard to manage this year.

Thanks for the information. It has really hurt our honey hole this year. I guess I will consider spraying it in the summer if the water doesn't go down. Sounds like I had better save up.....
