Should 2019-2020 Deer Season in South Delta

Postby Deltamud77 » Mon Jul 29, 2019 11:47 am

be shut down due to the unprecedented flooding?

I’ve heard of some camps in the South Delta that will likely not deer hunt, regardless of the State’s decision. I’ve heard of River camps all the way to Memphis that are contemplating the same thing...voluntary shut down.

Thoughts?

The deer probably need the break. Most of the deer pictures you see out of the south delta right now are all emaciated looking. That's because they just don't have the range to forage like normal. So food is in short supply. Even if the flooding broke right now and the deer had some time to put some fat on for the winter, I don't think they will have time to get back to enough of a normal state to put fat on. How much under growth is going to bloom out anything worth the deer eating before it gets cold? How much eating is it going to take to get back to a normal weight?

I could go along with closing the season for everything south of Hwy. 12. Can't see how this would effect much of anything north of that. The river clubs will take care of themselves. Most of them have a much better handle on their situation than MDWFP does.

I tend to think that the season South of 12 should be closed or should only open January 1 and close January 31, at best.

If I were a River Camp member, given what I know, I’d be in the side of restraint, even if that meant not deer hunting this year.
