Wetland or upland in MS Delta

Can anyone give me a description of what would be considered the difference in wetland and upland in the Mississippi Delta as far as being able to build a cabin on the site? My understanding is that you cannot build in wetlands, but is that elevation/vegetation/other? Thanks.

Great post by novacaine. Figuring out if it's a wetland or not is the easy part. Dealing with the county could be the frustrating part. You can request a jurisdictional determination (jd) with the Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg for your campsite. An area that small will not take long at all for a jd. Shoot me a pm and I will put you in touch with who you need to talk to.

http://geology.deq.ms.gov/floodmaps/Viewer/viewer.html

Get on the ms deq website and pull up the flood hazard data and figure out where you are, find the base flood elevation close to your site then add 1.5 ft to 2 ft to the elevation...........I think most counties have gone to at least 18 inch freeboard.

BFE's in south delta may be lower than actual 2011 flood elevations.......
Yazoo River/MS River got to 106.2 ft in May 2011 down south.........and that's high!!!
