I don’t have one but two of my friends bought a savage combo. for their kids, one actually bought 2, 1-243, the other a 7mm-08, he says they shoot great and we’re pretty inexpensive but I don’t know how much they cost (maybe aound $300, I think for rifle and scope?)

My dad bought me a salvage 270 with a taco 3x9-32 scope when I was about 12 for Christmas. He was a bird hunter and never has hunted a deer so I started deer hunting late in life. I wanted to deer hunt so he finally got me a rifle and had to figured the rest out myself. When I killed my first deer with it he came out looked at it and went back inside. My younger brother and I tied it up in the shed and cleaned it. Since then I have killed truckloads of deer, hogs, and a couple bobcats with it and while it is nothing to look at it works.

When my son was 6 I got him a salvage 7-08 with the adjustable accu trigger (set to min), cut the stock down and had a muzzle brake put on it. It shoots sweet and over the 3 years he has had it (even though we don’t deer hunt much) he has killed 7 deer (6 of them bucks ), a hog, and a bobcat with it.
So while I can’t compare a salvage to other brands I can say you can’t go wrong with them.

Ruger American.

Shot a sub 1 Moa the other day with a vortex scope. Good combo.

Savage makes one of the best grouping guns in production. Not pretty but they shoot great.

Fit has been my biggest thing. Find a gun that fits and squeeze the trigger. I’m going Sauer on my next

Man you can’t really go wrong with any of the guns now. They all shoot great. I personally think savage is the best for the money but the ruger American is nice as well. Also you can find basic Remington 700s at a good price. Academy has a good deal on TC compass right now. It’s on sale for $275, you get an Academy $25 gift card and also mail in for a $50 Visa card. Hard to beat that deal.

I know a lot of folks will disagree, but I’ve had excellent results wit a .243 with the right bullet

I bought my daughter a Marlin 7mm-08 and it’s been a great gun. Killed a pile of deer with the 7mm-08 so I’m a believer. They aren’t making the marlin any longer as Remoington gobbled them up. I would let him feel the Ruger and Savage and pick the one he likes. I personally like the feel of the Ruger American compact.

Savage or Tikka youth/compact 7-08. Leupold or Nikon scope. A gun like that will kill any whitetail on earth out to 200 yds.
