The Find Of A Lifetime By 3 Brothers

Postby YoBenny » Wed Jul 18, 2018 7:40 am

In 1949, three brothers were in a small town in Bulgaria digging clay to make bricks with.
They stumbled onto one of the most spectacular stashes that has ever been found - The Panagyurishte Treasure.
Dating to the 4th century B.C. and probably owned by the Thracian king Seuthes III, it is thought that it was buried to hide it from invading armies of the Celts or Macedonians in two big fights that took place there around that time.

The treasure is a wine drinking & libations set that consists of a phiale, an amphora, three oinochoai and four rhytons with a total weight of 9.34 pounds of 24-karat gold. All nine vessels are richly and skillfully decorated.
The designs include depictions of both zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figures and combines the artistic tastes of the Greek world and the Orient. It's value is officially listed in value as "priceless".

They actually found this guys tomb around 2002. Inside were other pieces but the bronze head of him placed in a ceremonial spot in front of his head is the most well known piece.

Also the libations tray is adorned with what is clearly african heads and acorns.
I find this rather odd and it seems as if this piece came from another origin and was simply
added to his collection.
