Re: Public Land
Anybody else heard the rumor that the Wildlife Conservancy was going to purchase the land and hold it until the state could buy it. Heard this one after hearing that ATCO cut off the sale to the state after they said it was going to take over a year to close on it.
Re: Public Land
Folks on the Bullnettle are indicating the ATCo thing is a done deal.

Re: Public Land
Unreal.
Re: Public Land
Well I want to know how much this cost me, as a taxpayer they are using my money to buy this land right? I bet it aint cheap either. I want to know how the state, already says they are short on funds for managing what they already have, yet they just want to buy more...with what money??
I'm not against the state buying land, that CAN BE a good thing, i just want to know how they are affording this. and please don't make it like that WMA around PG where it cost you over $300 to deer hunt, if you get drawn! yeah that's PUBLIC alright.

Re: Public Land
I heard $34 MILLION was the price, supposed to be Thad Cochran WMA (I just threw up in my mouth) Might as well call it Haley Barbour WMA then. but the name doesn't matter. Can anyone tell me the last time a GTR on the Sunflower WMA was pumped? Last I was told was the state didn't have money to buy diesel for the pumps...yet here we are spending this kind of money. I'm not against the state buying more land, just be more fiscally responsible.
Now I'll bet they put up gates and make nice gravel roads through the place only to allow you to walk in. You want to go hunt back there..... walk two miles down the road. There are ducks in that hole.... carry your decoys a mile down the road instead of drive an ATV. Want to hunt this place.....put in for a draw and hope for the best...

Re: Public Land
I'll go on record as saying I don't' care how they bought it, or how much it cost, or who got punted out of their camp, or what the dumb name is, as long as we can hunt it, I'm giddy with delight. All we need is some gravel on the road and some paint or WMA signs on the border trees, and we are good to go.
What we don't need is a ten page brochure full of bizarre rules or any on-line, electronic based process. It should be show up every day and have at it. I don't want to hear about Tue-Wed-Sat-Sun unless it's a big game draw day during primitive weapon season only east of the west levee except during a fortnight during coon season before sunrise, unless the gate is closed for high water. MY GAWD WE HAVE ENOUGH OF THAT.
Enjoy it while it's new fellars. When another WMA was acquired the hunting was phenomenal for a few years then more and more regulations, now it's a sorry draw. "Skunk Cove" and "Pintail Pass" are no more and nobody duck hunts the best part, crazy. Unfortunately, trying to keep all the squirrel hunters, deer hunters, frog giggers, and duck maniacs happy is near impossible.
My father was told he had 30 days to get his stuff out of his blind on the Tennessee River bottoms before the TVA came in and burned ALL of them back in the 50's. Then TVA open it back up for all to hunt. So this is nothing new.
I do absolutely detest naming a WMA after public figures but it seems to be the political thing to do. All WMA'S should be named after the geographical landmarks or historical names of the area, and stay thataway.
