Kinda funny how all the CWD talk has just gone away. You don't hear anything about it anymore. Of course Ground Zero is under water and all the deer are displaced, so who knows whats going on

There should plenty of talk about CWD tonight in Vicksburg at 6:30 at the convention center at a meeting hosted by the MDWF&P to give the public the facts and updates.

Yeah, I was there along with about 300 others, which I guess was a pretty good turnout.
The speakers were a PHD Vet with the Nat'l Park Service, the CWD leader for Arkansas, and Russ Walsh, the Wildlife Executive Staff Officer with MDWF&P, and then a panel open to questions with various Miss officials.
It was a very factual meeting basically discussing what CWD is, how it is believed to be transmitted, and what the response will be. No new revelations, basically what is already on the Dept.'s website. It was interesting to hear Arkansas' response, which has been very dramatic over the past 2 years since it showed up there. Their first sampling of 266 deer and elk returned about 23% positive (20% in adult females and 32% in adult males), so it was already widespread when they found it. In 2 years they are now up to sampling over 5,000 animals per year, and I think they have a pretty good handle on where it is in the State, and they are taking some very positive steps to keep it contained. They sample hunter's harvest, roadkill, processors and taxidermists.
That is basically where Miss is now; i.e., sampling to determine just how widespread it is here. Of course the displacement casued by the high water is not helping, and the good news here is none has been detected yet. Miss will continue with their monitoring, sampling, etc. They didn't get into any real changes to come, except the banning of supplemental feeding, baiting, and mineral licks in the 6 MS counties that are effected.
They all pointed out that this thing is a marathon and not a sprint, and now that we have one CWD case in Miss, it is not going away and the Dept will stay on top of it as best they can.
