Time to Rate the 2017-18 Season

Postby NyssaAquatica » Thu Feb 01, 2018 1:19 pm

How did your season go? What worked and what didn't work, management-wise?

I'd give mine a 9/10. Killed a lot of ducks but also made some very good memories with my old man and best buddies.

Last year was a wash, so it was nice to have ducks holding in the area in greater numbers. In general, I think that's due to the colder weather. On a smaller scale, we didn't spend a dime on planting holes and let the natural vegetation grow back - this resulted in many more mallards feeding and loafing in our holes. Our pin oaks and nutalls were also dropping acorns in our WRP, so a historically mallard/gwt/pintail hole became a woody/mallard/gwt/pintail hole. Will this work again next year? I have no idea.

And none of that hogwash about "any time in the field with good friends and fellowship makes it all worthwhile, so I give a it a 10."

Kills wise, about a 7.5.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)

I was very fortunate this season in that the days I chose to and was able to hunt quite often turned out to be very successful days. Missed several days due to ice, but the thaw payed off big time. Biggest regret is two old buddies couldn’t make the group hunt this season, so that was a bummer.
I am interested in purchasing duck calls that were made by Mike McLemore. I am a family member and they have a sentimental value.

It sucked! Thank God for canvasbacks or it would have been the worst ever in 28 years of duck hunting

Best season we've had in ten years. December was terrible, but was in he right spot at the right time every time the whole month of January. There are some spots that in ten years when it gets 7 degrees, I know where I'll be sitting if at all possible. Probably best season since at least 01-02. Maybe 99.

Best season on record for club. Probably my top or #2 for sure. Be a close one to 99 if not better. Great season on my place in the hills also.

One of the worst for my crew in memory. And that reaches back to point system days.

Very pleased with this year. Give it a 10..

We averaged close to 12 birds per hunt.

Think we hunted around 23 times and killed about 275 ducks . this year I had a good mixed bag .. but I swear my group only killed like 2 wood ducks that’s as few as I can ever remember killin .. another oddity was the early season. 1st time in many years that I didn’t kill a goose or early teal. Only went like 1 time ..
