Chesapeake training

Postby TK » Tue Jan 03, 2017 6:09 pm

I'm wanting to have a 7 month old female chessy trained to duck hunt, kennel, and possibly do hand signals. I'm not wanting anything but a decent duck dog. I understand this can run anywhere from $400 to $800 a month. Who would any of you suggest in north Mississippi preferably northeast Mississippi? I didn't pick a Chesapeake myself it's a registered dog that was given to me and seems to like retrieving a little naturally.

I have 1 yr old female chessie that is with Steve Vires in Como until Thursday. He came highly recommended from another fellow chessie owner.

Both the above choices are good. Steve Vires just finished up a Chessie that I watched work several times while my dog was up there; he's stacking up birds this season; he's about 20 minutes north of Oxford so a good bit closer to you. PM me if you need more info. You can see pics of this particular dog on Steve's Facebook page.

Alan Sandifer in Lumberton has worked with many chessies, up through the Q level. Steve Vires would do a very good job for you, and he has great training water. Ronnie Lee in (sort of) Louisville, MS at Duck Roost Kennels would also be an excellent choice.

What age should you start them out? How old is too old?

Any time after they have they permanent teeth. You will save yourself some money if the dog has (real world) solid OB (sit/here/heel) before they go to the trainer. I have seen dogs start at age 6, so you have plenty of time.

If you are willing to go as far south as Meridian, Chip "Skippy J" Johnson would also do a very good job for you.

For what it's worth, I took my 6mo chessie to Steve today.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)
