Seed ID in mallard craw
Since the last rains we've been able to hunt one of our late morning holes. Every duck we've been killing has had his craw full of this seed. What is it?
At 1st I thought it was some kinda wheat or oat, but it looks too small. I have no clue.

That would be rice all right. Sounds like we need a bear in the air over there.

I've grown both rice and oats, and from that picture, I honestly can't tell which it is....it's best not to jump to any conclusions of illegal activity until proven, but by it coming from the Neshoba area, I'd have to guess oats, not rice....jmho.
Re: Seed ID in mallard craw
Kinda late for oats to be hanging? Ducks dry feeding oats in Dec... Awhile back the hen scratch feed the wifey was getting at the Co-op had lotta oats to my surprise. Chickens didn't seem to go for them either; lotta waste ...oats for horses. We changed brands w/o oats. I guess what I'm saying oats would seem to be strange choice for bait for anything and way outa season naturally. $.02

Rice has a ridge down the side of it. That's what I think I see in the photo.
Oats will have a crease, not a ridge.
One thing about rice is, you can hear it grinding against the other seeds if you roll the crop around in your fingers before you open it up. It makes a distinct sound because of the way the seeds rub against one another.

Those ducks may be flying to the delta or some other rice paddy in the evening, feeding at night, and flying back in the morning. They could make that flight from Neshoba to delta rice in under an hour and a half.
