scope suggestions for a 223

Postby teul2 » Mon Oct 17, 2016 7:50 am

I built out a new upper for my AR this summer. I wanted short-ish rifle that would be geared more to precision. I put on a heavy 18", 1:8 twist, 416r Stainless Fluted .223 Wylde barrel with a 15in free float tube to try an squeeze out a little more precision. Also added offset backup sights. I have yet to put a scope on it as I really just can't decide what to buy. I don't expect to be shooting hundreds of yards, so I was thinking I'd keep the scope smaller. Something like the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 on a one piece cantilever mount. I am open to suggestions, but trying to not break $500 total for it.
What are you guys shooting on a 223 these days?

That is a solid and wise choice right there.

I put a Bushnell 3-12x 40mm with the BDC reticle calibrated for .223. I've been extremely satisfied and it didn't break the bank.

I looked at this Burris today at lunch and liked it alot! I don't really need the reflex on top, but the scope was crystal clear with great FOV at 1x and 4x.

Primary Arms makes a 1-4 or 1-6 that gets great reviews. That Burris weighs a ton, especially with that mount. Check out the Aero Precision mount. AR-15s aren't supposed to weigh 10 pounds, imo.

If you are thinking scoped AR, I would go with the Nikon M223 w/ BDC reticle. They make a cheaper P223, but cheaper is rarely ever better when talking optics. Be sure to get the M223 mount with it. It is worth the coin.

Vortex is making some great optics now, as is Sig Sauer. I just put a Sig Romeo 5 red dot on my AR "Pistol" and was really impressed with it. I have a Vortex Sparc on my AK, and it is just Ok. It is the first gen Sparc and the newer ones are considerably nicer.

Yea, I am leaning away from a red dot simply because I plan on hunting with it some. I was just looking at the Nikons this morning. I really like the BDC reticles. I will probably never shoot it over 100 yards unless I am just out playing, but like that the measurements are built in for me for later.

Burris makes good scopes in that price range as well.
