I had a 2005 Duramax, with a Superchips programmer, On fuel economy mode I was getting 18 mpg in town and around 20-22 on the highway. I loved it. Then some drunk A-hole crossed onto my lane on the highway a totaled it out back a moth ago or so. I now have a 2008 duramax stock and the fuel mileage is terrible (about 12 mpg in town) I am about to do the delete and programmer route to get it back up there. I will always always always own a larger vehicle, especially after having a head on collision at 60 mph. he was in an Altima.. so I won that battle. I don't know how it didn't kill him, but I walked away without a scratch, a miracle! Had I been in a smaller truck who knows...
The ride isn't great, the oil change and all is more expensive, but you have to do it way way less frequent, so it averages out.
I used to tow about 14k lbs regularly and it worked great, now I have a 36' camper and tractor and stuff to pull every now and then, but I like the fact that I can just go hook up to almost anything and take off.

I'll always own a diesel

I've got a 2006 Duramax. 189,000 miles and I love it. Now with that said, if I had to go by something now, I would go with the 1500 with the 6.2 and the eight speed trans since I don't work with the truck. I pull my boat with it and it was a load on my Z-71 but I don't travel as much with it now.

I have my second 2500 HD since 2010. I've loved both of them. I kept the first one 3 1/2 years.......put 60,000 miles on it......and still got $43K when i traded it in to dealership on my new one. I only ordered another one b/c they changed the body style and interior. I plan on keeping this one for a long time. I do use mine to pull 16ft trailers full of atv's, loaded down enclosed trailers and such but also pull my tractor with a gooseneck. The ride definitely isn't as good as a 1500, but it still isn't bad either. I get a hair better mpg than my 1500's i had before the two 2500's. The oil changes for me at the dealership are exactly the same cost as i was paying for the gas burners. i get them at the dealership b/c they'll automatically give me a powertrain warranty to 150,000 miles on it if i get all service work done there. If you plan on putting a lot of miles on one and/or pulling, i'd go with the diesel. If you don't plan on really using it for pulling and such......go with the 1500.

Forgot to mention in my post earlier, I was getting 13.5 to 14 mpg on hwy before deleting and program. Now I get between 20 and 21 doing 70 on I-55. It's amazing what these trucks will do when you take the dam government out of them!!!!

I have a 2006 Duramax. 117k. Before i put 35's on it I was getting 24 MPG on the highway. I have EFI Live tuning (custom tuning, not a boxed tuner for the trucks), 5" turbo back exhaust, egr delete, etc etc.

I love the truck. Unfortunately with what I tow 5 days a week I'm looking to sell it for a 3500. Probably going in the 09-13 range and I'm doing to dump all the DPF and DEF emission stuff on it.
