rice

any body ever tried throwing rice in a moist soil area, directly into water, will it come up

I don't know about rice but Millet will.

Rice can do OK in a moist soil setting. The first thing I would tell a person interested in doing this is to "manage your expectations". As cheap is rice seed is, it will not cost much to add some diversity to the food supply. It will not come no were close to resembling a rice field.

I have put it directly into shallow water. When the seed starts sprouting, drain the water and let the rice peg into the mud. It did best for me in the wettest areas of the field (borrow areas).
