Building a cabin

I inherited about 350 acres between Raymond, Terry and Utica way off the beaten path. I have been seriously considering building a small cabin on a little pond there. Would like to do it myself. Nothing fancy, just a one room structure with a loft, porch, wood burning stove and some windows. Very cheap, build with ;eft over materials. Likely will go with an outhouse, potable water or well, and a small solar power system to run a couple of lights and a small fridge on occasion - no tv or ac. Something I can use in the winter to hunt for a few days, spend a night or 2 during the fall and spring as well. Seems like someone on here did this a few years ago, I just can't seem to find the thread. Any advice, plans, "don't do its' would be greatly appreciated.

I remember a thread where a member built a fine cabin with rough cut cypress boards and weathered tin on the inside.

If it has some good timber, you can easily get someone with a portable saw mill to come cut all the lumber. Not sure running prices, but the guy here in Carrollton charges $200 per 1000 board feet. Should get you all the lumber you need cheap.

I am considering using a storage container to build myself a little portable camp this summer. They can be hauled easily. I can build it out at home and have it hauled to camp and hook it up. They are 8x40 andone thing I like about them is they are easy to lock down and secure.

If I were to do it - I would have running water - if only it was a small pump hooked up to a sink / shower. we hooked a 12v pump to a 500 gallon tank at our deer camp and it works great. we just use it to wash hands off after cleaning a deer and what not. tank gets filled by the gutter and downspout from the roof run off.


Also I would also run the wires for basic electricity - a few plug ins and a few light fixtures. - that way it would always be available if you decide to run generator power or get service out there.

Several years ago, I wanted to do the same thing on a small piece of property I own. Would have loved to build a little rustic cabin in the woods but didn't have the resources. I bought a metal building 12x28 and had it delivered from Jackson. It was just a shell... I wired it, insulation, walled it, etc... I got water and electricity ran and made it into what I needed. I have pretty much everything down there to live in it if I had to. I love spending weekends at the farm in this cabin and my girls love going with me.

Good luck on doing this Sam, it's a fun project.

We built one (contracted) that is 32'x32'. Fireplace, two full baths, two bedrooms and a loft that has three full size beds and the exterior is all cypress boards and a porch across the front the full length.
We spend more time on the porch on the swing and rocking chairs than inside so this is something you may want to consider.
If you would like to take a roadtrip over to Newton one day to look at it for ideas, give me a holler.
