AR-10

Postby landscaper » Sun Nov 22, 2015 7:25 pm

Thinking about trying to get in an AR-10 but just don't know enough about them. Do not want to spend $2k but want a decent gun with fair long range accuracy. If you were looking to buy one what would you get? Would you build it? Who makes the best whole gun? Who makes the best components? Would you stick with .308 or consider another caliber? What else do I need to consider?

I feel sure Wildfowler will chime in. But till then, I think he and Gator both have the DPMS Oracle.

Thanks. Any opinion on Bushmaster Rifles? My dad has one in .223 that is a tack driver but is a match grade gun. I have had my eye on this one but not sure if I would get a similar level of accuracy with it not being match grade.

Thoughts?

Getting mixed reviews on Bushmaster and DPMS. Hearing "whatever you don't buy this one." and "this one is the best gun on the market" about both. Is this just a "Ford vs Chevy" thing?

Not an AR-10 but I just ordered a Rock River Tactical Operator II. Rock River makes pretty good stuff from what I've seen.

I have a bushmaster ORC AR-10

I have a Nikon M-308 scope on it.

it shoots good. never hangs up.

I can't shoot it sub MOA - but its probably close.

I can hit a 8" steel gong every time at 200 yds.

I thought about an AR-10 for a while, but after shooting and handling a few I realized its just not a practical option for my intended use. Went this route instead http://www.springfield-armory.com/produ ... -socom-16/ and I've been very pleased.

i'd echo everything wildfowler had to say regarding the DPMS. I bought the Gen 1 simply because i came across a gun shop sporting a price i couldn't turn down. I was thinking "meh, i can handle the little bit of extra weight" and I can, BUT the ounces start adding up quickly. in short, it's a heavy gun but like wildfowler, i bought a good sling and really don't think about it.

I changed out the gas block on mine and have had a good bit of trouble getting it lined up and dialed in correctly. mine doesn't hang, but my bolt doesn't catch on the last round 9 times out of ten, either. gonna strip it back down this spring when i have a little more time and put a different block on it which should end that little hang up.

Other than that, i've been a bit surprised at the accuracy of the gun. I put a Vortex Strike Eagle on it and it holds an outstanding group out to 200 yds. haven't pushed it past that simply because where i hunt, i can't see past 75-80 yds anyway.

biggest drawback i've seen thus far is you just can't go out and shoot the thing....rounds go quick and i swear, the folks at vann's get a little dollar sign in their eyes when i walk up to the counter for another few boxes of rounds. i have too many "hobbies" as is, so reloading is out, and i'll just have to grin and bear it.

in short, good gun that will fit the bill for most people and what they want to do.

When y'all say there may be compatibility issues with aftermarket parts on the DPMS guns are you referring to barrels, bolts, triggers, etc or are you talking about all the pretty bells and whistles you can put on them that just make them look cool?
