There have been a few over the years in Madison and Ridgeland, such as Mean Mallard, Indian Archery, etc..., but nothing that has been able to sustain the big box invasion.

Not really a 'hunting' store but circle 7 on 463 next to beagle bagel has Filson and other things like that. Probably your best bet for browsing.

I remember hitting the "close out" at Big Buck in Hattiesburg years ago. They gone. Speed made a mint with the old Mean Mallard, but the focus changed after the first sale.

It might not matter to most, but there is a good chance that if you go to Van's you will get to barter with the owner of the place. That fact alone has made a tremendous difference in his business vs others. He has done very well without having a big building and lot investment in a high traffic area!

I always figured in order to have a sporting good store you had to be a pecker head and not speak to people.

Vans can be that way sometimes - but several times I have been in there and the owner him self help me.

Vans has the best selection and very good knowledge about the product they sell.
