Ask DS: What is TOO much motor?
Ask DS: What is TOO much motor?
I am looking at buying an outboard from a fella and wanted to get ya'lls opinions on whether it would be too much motor or not. The motor is a 3 cylinder 2 stroke evinrude 65 hp tiller. My boat is a tracker grizzly 1648, tall transom, .100 hull. It says that it's rated for 50 hp, and this motor weighs a good bit less than most of the newer 4 stroke 50's I've looked at, but it's still got me concerned
I know the most logical thing to do would be go put it on my boat and test drive it, but because of the distance that's not an option. If anyone has run a larger tiller outboard on a similar sized boat I'd really appreciate some input. Time is kind of a factor because the motor probably won't last very long on the market.

Can you get fined for going over the rated horse power?

Re: Ask DS: What is TOO much motor?
The weight of you and the motor is the only thing I can think of. Since the weight of the motor is not a problem I don't see how you would have any issues. As long as the motor has power trim you should not have any steering torque issues.
I put a 20 hp two-stroke on the back about 1436 one time in the darn thing about flipped over backwards on me. There was no power trim and it was too much weight with me sitting back there and too much power for that size boat.
In your case I don't see it as being an issue. Just because it has an extra 15 horses available to you doesn't mean you have to use them all the time.

driven every kind of rig that's ever been made, driven the backroads so I wouldn't get weighed. - Lowell George

If the weight is good to go, I'd run it...I had a 15x44 w/ a 60hp on it that did just fine.

Insurance can be a problem if motor is over rating

You will be fine. That's plenty of boat for an old 60 HP motor. Don't give it a second thought.
Re: Ask DS: What is TOO much motor?
There is no fine for putting the over rated outboard on a boat, where it gets sticky is if someone gets killed or injured because of it being over powered you get into culpable negligence and it wouldn't be hard to prove, so be careful.

I had a 75 on a 16x56, ran the crap out of it for years.

I sell insurance and have never seen where they even remotely monitor the correct HP rating. FWIW
