GM Active Fuel Management oil usage

Postby teul2 » Tue Mar 17, 2015 9:51 am

Anyone else have a 2007 -2015 GM / Chevy with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) that uses oil? I have read several threads on truck boards about this that the AFM is what is causing my truck to use oil. My wife's 2007 Tahoe is starting to use oil as well now, and she has the AFM 5.3L also.

A few of these threads are also touting this Range Technology AFM Disabler that keeps your truck in V8 mode all the time. Keeping the motor in V8 mode is supposed to reduce or stop the oil burn caused by AFM. http://www.rangetechnology.com/pages/v8

Also, do any of the Chevy / GM V8s come with out the AFM anymore? Can't seem to find one on the used car sites with out it.

Mine is using oil too... I took it to GM dealer they changed the oil and said to come back at 1000 miles, should be tomorrow...

He said there were 3 options to fix it, some type of sensor (prob exactly what you are talking about), New Top end, or brand new Motor...

Since it's still in warranty I don't care as long as they fix it.

Will know more after tomorrow.

AFM SUCKS! I have an 07 Silverado with the 5.3L. It generally burns 1 qt every 3k miles. I have heard that you can disable the system and if your out of factory warranty they can't cancel your warranty.

RedHead, stay on em and don't let up. Hopefully they will make it right since you're still under factory warranty.
I am interested in purchasing duck calls that were made by Mike McLemore. I am a family member and they have a sentimental value.

Have an 07 Tahoe , burns at least a quart between changes. Only has about 70k on it. I have been thinking about trading it in on an expedition el.

geez, 1 quart every 3k. That's high... I wonder if it's caused by heat buildup around the non firing cylinders when AFM kicks in? That would be my assumption anyway.

My 2006 with the 5.3 L consumed a quart of oil every 3000 miles. That motor did not have fuel management so I wonder if there something else causing it?

FWIW...i know of several vehicles that use a quart every 3000 miles. I have an older toyota that actually states that kind of oil usuage on the service manual. Its the ones that use this 0w and 5w oil that scare me.

2001 5.3 yukon had started using a quart every few thousand miles, as well. 168k miles on it when i sold it and rarely had to add any between changes until around 145-150k.
