Rate The Season - 2014-15 Edition

Postby Deltamud77 » Mon Jan 26, 2015 8:26 am

On a scale of 1-10, how does this season compare for you to previous seasons.

My season was pretty bad...didn't get to hunt much and when I did, the birds were there but did not cooperate when they should have. It seemed we had birds, they just didn't want to play. Most reluctant birds I ever recall, as a matter of fact.

I'd rate the season for me personally as a 5.

I'd give it a solid 7. Instead of hunting on the weekends, I just decided to hunt when the birds were there. Out of about 12 days hunting, I had 4 solid hunts. For my average, that's pretty good.

Only was able to hunt weekends this year and spent a lot more time in the truck due to moving from the flatland, would still say 6 even tho it was so hit or miss. Have no clue what I would do if I didn't hunt. What's the countdown 10 months?

Depends on what we are measuring. I got to go more than I normally do, so a solid 8 there. Down side is there were few ducks in the area on the days I got to hunt, or other factors outside my control (i.e. decoy stealing low-lifes, etc.) messed up what could have been good hunts. So, on a duck killing scale this season has emitted a loud, wet, sucking sound.

But, I got to take the new pup to camp and to the blind a little, got to see birds and shoot a few, got to eat good and be outside, so overall I'm good. It was frustrating at times because I'd arrange time off during the week and when the weather looked to be perfect and just could not get on birds. Not having the luxury of time off work to scout like I would prefer was a limiting factor of course, but most of the bad days, nobody around us was killing either.

Oh, well, to balance it out deer season sucked pretty bad also. Saw more ginormous bucks killed this year in north MS than I can ever remember, including some 150+ boys really close to my house, but everyone in my area reported much less deer movement than they can remember. Lot of guys who normally are serious buck hunters were dropping dink bucks and does at the end of season just for meat - which I should have been doing instead of chasing nonducks I guess.

Solid 7, pushing 8.
Started off very well, slowed down considerably, but ended on a great note.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)

7 for me. River only got out 1 time so I couldn't hunt the timber like I normally do. We had 2 very good hunts, but the water went down just as fast as it came up.

Hunted our field and had some very good hunts for about 8 days straight until the birds got wise to the game.

Averaged around 13 ducks a hunt for a total of 36 hunts.

3rd year for my dog and she had 4 book retrieves that I will never forgot. One of which was a blind around 500 yards or more and 2 whistled it. Another was a crippled wood duck, and all I knew it hit the levee. She was gone for what seemed like forever, and came back with a Woodrow that just happened to be banded.

6.

hunted less than ever this year, and killed fewer birds than ever. but i had several good hunts, met some new people and ended the season on one of the prettiest sunrises i ever recall seeing from a duck blind. also, got to watch a close friend work his dog for the last time on that last hunt, as the ole man just can't physically do it any longer. it was definitely a memorable hunt.

looking forward to the youth hunt this saturday and started my to do list for the off season yesterday.

Started off an 8 or so on the 1st few weeks.... then slowed to a 3 or 4 and ended as a 0 for me. Didn't get to hunt much late season when the birds finally seemed to arrive, but finished with 3 straight skunks to end the year.

I'd average my season as a 5 as a whole based on the number of birds.... but a 10 on experiences. This season will be memorable to me in that it was the 1st season for my pup that I trained myself..... it was a rewarding feeling to watch him learn and progress and to see his passion, even if he didn't get the amount of retrieves I would have liked him to. We have another veteran dog that we use as well, so the season served as a way to integrate my pup into the process as well. I'll never forget the mornings I got up, but we weren't taking my dog. He'd beat the alarm (and me) up and would be waiting by the door. That gave me as big of a smile as watching him grab his 1st bird (a drake woody).

3. Had a great time, but the birds and I never were able to sync up.
