ask ds about jack plates?

I just bought a 40 yamaha 15" and I don't want to have to cut down my transom....what is the best route to go (product name/model) to bolt on and get my motor in the right spot?

The main problem you can have by trying to use a jack plate is the clearance between the front of the engine and the top of the transom. Especially when trying to tilt the engine. If it is a tiller model the handle may hit the transom and the set-back may cause reaching the handle more difficult.

I would find a 20" shaft, exhaust tube and shift linkage. Then buy an extension kit or find the long housing to make it a 20" motor. Water coming in through the cutout sux.

Id convert that motor to a long shaft…I don't think there's a product made to get a SS motor in the right spot on a tall transom boat. If the roles were reversed you'd have several options.

Only 2 options are to convert or cut down. Unless its a very wide bottom boat I would not recommend a 40 on a short transom being used in the dark! To easy to tip and usually to late time you notice! Not gonna be real cheap to convert either unless you can find a junked out motor

I wonder if a 6" or larger offset/spacer would work by moving the pickup out farther in cleaner water? I'm going to look at it tomorrow to see what it would take to cut it....my main concern if a splash well that's on this boat....I'm sure I would have more of a mod than just a simple cut....

A jack plate miiight work. You have to find the calculation for how high you can mount it. For every inch the cav plate is above the keel, you have to move it back a certain amount so it isn't out of the water. I don't know if you can get a jack plate to move it far enough back though. I'd expect the extension kit would cost about the same as a jack plate to suit your need and make it work.
