With Youth season approaching fast, it's time to make this years' version of the youth harvest thread. If your kid kills a deer or anything else for that matter post em up right here!!!

I've had my 7 year old warming up with the 10/22 this summer. He said he was ready to kill a deer like his big brother. I wasn't sure about letting him shoot the .243, but after shooting it at target practice he said he liked it. This little guy messed up and stopped at my whistle this morning when he was bouncing away. I asked the kid if he had the crosshairs on his heart, he said "ugh huh", I said kill him and he nailed him. Not sure who was happier in the stand between me, the kid, and his big bro.

After missing yesterday morning, Hunter put a great shot on this doe at about 80 yards.

Not good at posting pictures but here's the story. In Sept. I came home from work weekend at the camp with neck pain, went to the Dr., was referred to a surgeon, hearneated disc (sp) in lower neck, told the Doc., I wanted to avoid surgery at all costs, he said it would heal but would take some time. When my son came home from school I told him about my neck and said my days if dragging deer out were over for a while, I'd still take him hunting but if he killed something, the deer would be his responsibility, just scared to pick up or drag anything heavy. He just turned 14 and has killed a bunch of deer with a rifle but not a bow. We were invited to hunt at one of his friend's places that is loaded with deer. He'd shot one with his bow there about 2 weeks earlier but made a bad shot and lost it. We were sitting together, I was on
a ladder, he was a foot or 2 higher than me in a lock-on, big doe came from downwind side, smelled us and ran out into a field, stomping its feet about to start blowing, another deer walking the same path as the first walked directly below us but didn't smell us for some reason, I motioned to shoot that one, not wanting to move much (deer was about 10 steps), heard another deer coming and slowly turned, tapped his boot and said, "wait there's another one", since he was higher than me in the lock-on I was just looking at his boots and I didn't know he was locked on and drawn on the second deer, I was looking to my right to see what the 3rd deer was and heard "thwack", and he said "THAT was a good shot", turned to see the deer running off with his arrow in it, waited 30 minutes, got down and found a lot of good blood!!! We were pumped!!! Got on the blood walked almost straight to the deer, 100 pound doe, he and a buddy drug her out out loaded her on the 4-wheeler and to the skinning rack, I went inside his friends house, drank a glass of tea, came out and the deer was cleaned, boned out and in the ice chest, never had to touch it! Sorry for the long post but he dealt with it like a champ and I am very, very proud! I told him, he'd screwed up because now I know he can do it and I'd keep his knife sharp!

Thanks for posting Otis. Great to hear of younguns learning the whole process, not just the trigger pull. My great uncle put me on my first deer at 12 yrs old and told me to pay attention while he cleaned her. The next one I killed I had to handle by myself.... Toolk me at least 3+hrs. But I learned to be more efficient over time. Hope to do the same with my boys.
