Winch advice

Postby Sandy Creek » Fri Feb 07, 2014 10:19 pm

Need some advice on size winch I need. No using it for off roading or driving through swamp, etc. my situation is more of cruising timber, didn't want to park at mud hole on dirt road and walk so drive through and get stuck in deep rut on one side. Or turning around, back off road and ground was soft and tires caked up. It's going on Chevy 1500 and thinking 8000 lb smittybilt will get me. If you have experience with this let me know your thoughts

Get the biggest you can afford. An 8,000 will probley be fine but should'nt be much more money for a 10,000,would rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

^^this
I ran an 8k on my 1/2 ton for years with occasional bogging in bad situations. I went up to a 12k when I got a 3/4 ton. I went back to a 1/2 ton & put the 12k on it. It pulls the truck much better.

I have had 8K and 9K on my 1/2 ton trucks. Both have been fine. Yes I have bogged it down before, but generally speaking it was while using it for something other than pulling myself out or I should have known better than to try to drive there. It isn't that difficult to keep a block and tackle in the truck if you are concerned with the winch not having enough strength on a single line pull. I agree with getting best you can afford but at some point the weight on the front can become an issue(I am not smart enough to know what that point is or should be). I would put more emphasis on warranty and quality than the difference in 8, 9, or 10k lb winch. I assure you 8k lb winch is a lot better than the come-a-long option. Just remember always keep your nose pointed out.

i had a mile marker 9000 on my truck when i used to cruise timber. was an easy install an fairly cheap. last i saw of it arduckslayer picked it up an was puttin it on his coon huntin rig if i remember correctly. he probly used it more than i did. but i never had an issue with it. and it was recomended by a buddy that was REALLY into rock crawlers

I have a Mile Marker as well. I had a Warn that quit on me. I've had this 12k MM ever since.
