Pheasant recommendations

Postby dukhntn » Thu Dec 05, 2013 7:43 pm

Been kicking around the idea of going for a couple of years. Anyone have any outfitters you've been with in the past that you'd recommend or recommend shying away from? Not talking locally, but nebraska, South Dakota, etc...

You need to talk with Ramsey. Everything he does is top notch and well priced.

I've scoped out his offering and it will be on the short list for sure (actually, it is the short list right now.) I just want to see what has or hasn't worked for others so I can see what my options are.

You can still freelance SD...road hunting is allowed. Ask to join a drive...we never turned anyone down. Lower Brule tribe is non resident friendly and affordable. Winner and Chamberlian areas where good for us...wear comfortable boots

I hunt Nebraska every year and up to 2011 the hunting was unbelivable. I have afriend who owns a ranch out there so we spend a week deer and phesant hunting. In 2011 the birds would have rivaled any high dollar outfitter in the nation. Hes got a river that has CRP on each side and after deer hunting in the afternoon and walking back to the truck the brids cackeling in the CRP was so loud you could not hear someone talking from 5' away, no bs! West Nebraska has been hit pretty hard the past two years by drought. Was out there a few weeks ago and we did not kill as single bird. My advice would be to stay away from anything in western NE or western SD for a few years if you want to hunt wild birds they have been hit pretty hard. Nebraska does have a cool program called open fields. Farmers get paid to put their CRP in to public use. We hunt these some times and I have never seen another hunter while doing so. They have everything on Google earth so its pretty easy to find the public spots, and their are a bunch of them.

Hunt em while you can. Corn ethanol is working to make them scarce.

My father in law has been pheasant hunting every year for 35 years and he said this is the best place he's ever been. the hatch was low this year and they flat murdered them up there.

Is there a certain week or timeframe that y'all have found that is preferable to others?

Depending on your eating and drinking habits you can do 4 man hunt for 4 days for $1000 per man or less on the plan above

No need to spend big bucks to shoot pheasants unless that's just what you want to do. Go to Kansas or where ever.. Drive around the public land early in the morning and everytime you get to a low spot/draw in the road where the pheasants are pecking around...mark it.. The next morning, check which ones put the wind in Your face. Go to them and start walking Into the wind. Works like a charm. I done this for years and ate pheasant every night. Pretty easy DIY hunting
