What kinda boat are you putting it on? Do you care if its 2-stroke or 4-stroke? Whats the length and width of the boat? You looking for empty flat out speed? Full load speed? or just average two men and a few things top speed? I have 30hp yamaha 3 cyl on my 1648, and i'm pushing 32 mph with two grown men and river fishing equipment.......

Fastest would likely be a 2 stroke 350 hp mercury racing engine I would think. Unless you wanted to have a specialty shop work on the cylinders for you however I am not a big fan of that, not to mention going that fast in a boat.

I have a grizzly 1848. Max HP is 40. Looking for a 40 unless I could get a 25 that I knew would out run my 2001 mercury 25 without being too heavy. Cant decide between tohotsu, mercury, and Yamaha. I'd rather have Yamaha ortohotsu but the mercury is a lot cheaper with the same features. I may just get the 350 mercury like one dummy suggested.

I'm guessing by saying it's a 18x48 it's one of there john boats rather than one of their "bigger" boats? I'd try and find a tahatsu, Nissan, or Yamaha 3cyl 40. They usually are the hailed as the quickest tiller motors. I've got a 2001 Yamaha 40 3cyl that I wouldn't trade for anything!

Had a 40hp on an 1848 that we sold not long ago, it would run mid - high 20's.

If going new in the 40hp range I'd look at a 4 stroke 40hp Merc, can be hopped up to a 60hp relatively easy. The other choice would be the 2 stroke 40hp Tohatsu TLDI.

If looking for a 25hp new would be E-tec, used would be Tohatsu Mega, Yamaha 3 cylinder, or Suzuki 3 cylinder in that order...

My 25 yamaha will run with MOST 40hp motors on my 16' boat.

Thanks to everyone who gave honest opinions. Guess ill get me a 350 hp mercury and put on the back of it so it will make everyone happy and be a good joke to everyone. Even though it wont be in compliance with the US Coast Guard. And it says alot when Ya'lls most respected person on here pops off with a silly comment like that.
