2005 F150 Spark Plug Changeout

Postby H20fowlkiller » Wed Feb 20, 2013 4:01 pm

It has 76K miles on it and I want to change them before It gets too late, who has the best suggestions for getting them out. Ive heard heat the motor up and ive heard let it be ambient temp. Ive hear use and impact, and Ive heard take it out a few threads and spray with Aerokroil or WD40 and let soak for 15-30 min and then slowly take them out. I dont want to have to pay someone a pile of money to pull them out so just looking for whats worked for everyone else.

I have a '05 with 240K. Guy that does mine works at the Ford dealership. He wants mine hot as he can get it, and said it's very very very important to keep the wrench square/plumb. Number 8 is the one that gives the most trouble. But of course he has the "tool" to get a plug out if it breaks. He's changed mine 4 times I think and has never broke one. Might as well change the coil packs while your in there.

I changed mine last yr myself. not too bad broke off 1 and had to go buy the tool from oreileys. Get em hot by driving around, spray with penetrating oil, crack them a 1/4 - 1/2 turn then respray with penetrating oil and let sit for 10-15 minutes. make sure to use the updated SP515 plug when you replace them.

I have the plug extractor tool I'll sell you cheap if you want it. PM me if you want it.

i did mine my self and didnt break any. i have an 05 5.4L i changed em at 120K
1) clean around plug holes use compressed air and a vaccum
2) let truck idle 10-15 min to warm up enough to still work on
3) passenger side of truck on fire wall is your computer with 2 plugs i think, remove computer and bracket.
4) remove all coil packs
5) spray brake free, wd 40, silicone spray, PENETRATING OIL, or something down in each spark plug hole. let sit for 5 minutes.
6) START PRAYING
7) start by applying pressure on plug like you are gonna tighten it, the 1/8 to 1/4 turn out and stop.
8) spray more penetrating oil or your choice. let sit another 5 mins.
9) start by 1/16 turn in, then 1/8 to 1/4 turn out, then 1/8 to 1/4 turn out, then 1/16 turn in. Keep repeating this process till plug is all the way out.
10) Keep praying not break.
11) buy the champion plugs designed for this truck and that are not 3 piece plugs. (about $21 apiece.)

I have the tool to remove the plug if it does brake let me know if you need it. I am in Brandon.
Look out for dem danm COOTS
there every were
