Whatcha Shootin...?

Postby Hole Hunter » Sun Feb 10, 2013 10:35 pm

I am seriously considering getting a turkey specific shotgun. For many years now I have just been using my Beretta Extrema as a crossover duck / turkey hunting gun. I am now thinking I might want something lighter, with shorter barrel and less expensive to chase the long beards.

When you think Turkey guns typically the Mossberg 535/835 or Remington 870 come to mind, so I was just curious what most of you shoot in the turkey woods? I doubt you can go wrong with either, but it is always good to get some opinions when considering a new shotgun.

I shoot a Remington 870 3 inch magnum with a 21 inch barrel. Patterns great is light and easy to handle. There is a really nice Remington 870 turkey model for sale in the classifieds, tried to get a friend of mine to buy it.

870 12 gauge. My dad likes the 870 20 gauge. I may try my luck with one this season.

I hunt with an 3.5" 870 26" barrel and wouldn't trade it for the world. Patterns the Hevi 13 3.5" 2.25oz #6s with a JellyHead .660 choke incredibly.

I've got two 870's, one three inch with a 21 inch barrel and a 3.5 inch with a 23 inch barrel. Both shoot great. I also have a SX3 turkey gun that is my preference.

I got a NEF single shot 10ga. 20" barrel. Xfull screw in choke.

shooting the Nitro hevi shot blends its incedible. it will flat out knock a bird of its feet at 70yds if thats your thing.

unless you plan to buy the Nitro shells stick to the 12ga. the 10ga only has an advantage with the Nitro shells, and they are $9 per shell.

I like to hunt with my winchester model 120 20 ga with the federal heavy weight #7's. packs a good punch for the 20ga and is really light and short.

Hmmm, So you are telling me y'all like the 870...?

My brother has an 870 that he wouldn't trade for anything and Dad has on old Mossberg 835 that he swears by.

Anyone shoot a Winchester SXP? Just reading the specs on the website it is a pound lighter than the others mentioned. All these pumps are about in the same price range of $500 - $600, so that doesn't help the decision.

I typically don't buy into the cosmetics, but the bottomland on that 870 sure is sharp. 8)

Benelli M1 super 90 w/ 24 inch barrel and IC choke. Put a pistol grip stock on it and had it dipped. gonna shoot TSS 9's out of it this year so may have to change chokes but we'll see.
