Building a Blind.......Questions

Postby BigMike » Wed Jan 02, 2013 12:44 pm

After years of hunting public land, I have finally managed to flood a hole in a soybean field on our land. We are just hunting behind a makeshift blind of cane stabbed in the ground. Works fine, but now that I can, I would like to build a nice permanent blind where we can hunt in relative comfort. I have never hunted out of a permanent blind in my life, so I have zero experience about design. Looked around the internet some for plans, but not finding much. We will clear out and and build in an area thick with ash saplings where the field meets the treeline. What do you guys like in a blind? Pics would be great.....just not sure how to start. Plan on building it after this season when we let the water out.

Keep it as low profile and small as possible! Storage in front of you, like by your feet is nice and you can do that by sloping the front wall, which will also help break up the boxy profile.
I am interested in purchasing duck calls that were made by Mike McLemore. I am a family member and they have a sentimental value.

I am looking to replace a blind for next year, and came across some plans and a video from Wade Bourne at DU-search his name and duck blind and you'll come upon it. If not-PM me and I'll get it for you. I'm looking into using his plans-pretty solid looking blind, not terrible to build, and not too expensive. Good luck!

Best to allow 30" wide per man

In my opinion, the key to a good duck blind is in the paint job. You know, make it match it surroundings before you ever brush it. We call this one the "Blue Blind".

If you don't slope the front wall like previously mentioned leave the frame open that way you can you use the cross pieces of the frame for setting boxes of shells and other oddities needed during the hunt. If it will be in the flooded portion of the field build it high enought that the floor is out of the water, just a comfort thing really and helps keep your stuff dry.

I would build a sled blind. Way more versatile and doesn't limit you to one side of the field or the other. If you want to move it to another field you just load it up.

What "blue" are you referring to? It looks perfectly blended into the existing surroundings. I wouldn't touch it! :D
Did they not ask the dude at the paint store or better yet............read the color on the can?
