Which Grinder To Buy?

Postby huntingup1 » Thu Dec 06, 2012 2:38 am

Any of you on here who does their own meat processing got any ideas on a decent meat grinder? I will probably be grinding 2 or 3 deer a year and possibly some hogs in the summer. I'm looknig for a well built grinder that will be with me for a few years.

I don't know about "well built", but if you're just doing 2-3 deer per year you don't need a $300+ unit for it to last quite some time. This is what I bought and I am very pleased.

I bought the $80 model that is in Bass Pro and Cabela's. I do 3-4 deer a year with mine and never had any problems.

pond, post the link if you can. My hunting club passes around a 1 hp commercial grade cabelas grinder. It could double as a chipper/shredder. It is unchokable. Very heavy duty. More than most folks would need.

Tombstone,

Evidently they don't make my model any more. I thought it was around $80, but I may be wrong. Also, I spend a few extra minutes trimming up my deer meat. I don't just dump big chunks in the grinder.

I think regular price at Cabela's is about $120.00. Even at $120.00, I would still pay it.

I trim way beyond what many folks do. NO SILVER or thin membrane. It may take me 4 hours to do 2 hind quarters and front sholders. When i get through it is nothing but red meat you could put in a tenderizer or use for stew meat. I grind it at least twice too.

I bought a # 8 LEM from Bass Pro 2 yrs ago and it's been awesome. Got my money back out of it the first year. I usually grind 3-4 deer plus my hunting buddies usually grind theirs. First year we put about 15 through it.

I caught a "Chard" brand on sale at Sportsman's Warehouse last year for $149 and it did 9 deer last year and 4 so far this year and is still in perfect shape. It doesn't bog down or act like it's even struggling when I'm using it..but I do trim my deer up pretty good like it sounds like some of y'all do. I do not double grind mine, what's the advantage to double grinding?? (signed, rookie processor)
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

If ya gona just be grinding and not worry about have ground meat for burgers, then dont add fat. Just brown ya meat in a little olive oil.Taste alot better/healthier and alot less trouble. We only use the ground stuff for chillis, sgetti, boudin, tacos etc.....FYI
