? For folks w trailers for camps- frozen pipes

Postby matador1 » Wed Oct 10, 2012 5:32 am

What so you do to keep pipes from freezing when you're not there to keep water running? Found one to rent for hunting season and trying to think of all the pros and cons. Thought about how easy pipes freeze up.

cut water off. find the lowest point of the water lines and install a drain. open all the faucets in the house and open drain. down a dab of rv antifreeze in your "p" traps. make sure you toilet drains both the bowl and tank along with the fill valve... i learned this one the hard way.. mine froze and had hair line cracks every where and it just wept a litlle bit but in a weekend would soak the floor of my camp. the fill valve in the tank cracked and it would never shut off and just keep running..

They make an electrical deal that wraps around your pipes that comes on at 40 degrees. Don't know much about it but know some that swear about it...
Why is my mouth so dry this morning, when I drank so much last night?

Turn all facets on, then disconnect the water line and let the facets empty..

Dukmisr is right. We all have drains on the main line. Everytime during the winter that I leave, I turn the water off and then open the drain. I put in a tankless water heater for that very reason too. I can turn the water back on and take an immediate shower. If you turn the water off and drain the line.....there's nothing to expand and break.

I have lots of experience with elevated house trailers. You have to wrap the $#!+ out of the pipes with insulation. Then i leave heat on to say 50. If you do that its got to get really cold to have a problem. The draining thing works too, but a pain in the az imo. You will get pleny of plumbing time in fixing pipes until you get it insulated right.
