Postby merlebo05 » Tue Oct 02, 2012 9:07 pm

I am looking at buying a polaris ranger out of state but have some concerns. If anyone has ever bought an ATV out of state or has knowledge in this area shoot me a PM.

We bought ours several years ago in Arkansas. We did not have to pay taxes.

If the state of Mississippi goes to that dealership and audits their books....which they have done in the past...they will come looking for the taxes....

I am not doubting anything, but how can the state of MS go into another state, into a private business, and audit their books?

Look at this way. If you don't get caught you save $500-$1700 depending on what your buying. If you do, you will pay that and a couple hundred in penalties. They are not going to send you to jail so you are essentially betting $200-$300 bucks to gain the above. I am betting on it.

Bought two four wheelers in NW TN and didn't pay sales tax on either. Hand over cash, load it up, drive home...

State of MS has bigger fish to fry than out of state purchases of ATVs that the sales tax isnt paid on

As far as the taxes go you are correct that you don't have to pay ARKANSAS taxes. Reason being is that you will in "good faith" pay them in MS. Or whatever state your in. I buy a good bit out of state, namely in Arkansas. I never pay Arkansas taxes, but I always pay MS tax on the item. It's business though, so I am a lot more likely to get audited than an individual. I despise the IRS in it's current form, but at the end of the day it isn't prudent for me to be sneaky. Just my 2 cents.

Is there a difference in purchasing several thousand dollars worth of goods online in a year and not paying any sales tax verses one out of state transaction such as described above?

Does anyone really report internet transactions? There's going to come a day real soon when all internet transactions require sales tax to be collected at the point of sale. Until then....

I personally think there should be a national sales tax and no more payroll / income taxes.
