Do ducks feed on either of these enough to justify spending much time transplanting any?

I read an article about Missouri creating low spots in their impoundments and transplanting these just for teal.

I thought mallards loved duck potato but that is just hearsay. I've never seen enough duck potato in one spot to make Any kind of personal observation.

There is a certain WMA in the Delta that when/if the lake dries up in summer, duck potato will absolutely cover the bottom from bank to bank.

I found some mudplantain (duck salad) in a rice field on another WMA and pulled up a clump last weekend. Dropped it in one of my duck holes to see how it'd do. From what I've read, getting the duck potato tubers is a little more difficult.

I need to see a pic of this stuff. Never heard of either.

I have seen ducks chowing down on duck tater like there was no tomorrow.

It was in a rice field they're gonna disk anyway.

I don't see where it would be illegal to go and remove a plant. Now, if your trying to dig up a 60 y/o oak, that might be a problem.

Wingman, if your transplant makes it i'd like a sprig or two myself. We plan on putting old crab traps over it to help keep the wading birds and ibis from digging it up before it gets established. Probably gonna add a good bit of sago as well.

What about creeping burhead as food source for ducks? {Echinodorus cordifolius (L.) Griseb. }
Similar to duck potato. We have huge areas of it but never seems to be used by ducks very much. What are your experiences?

We have a release of it and have produced some for wetland commercial growers. As far as I know it is used in a few wetland restoration practices. Have never heard of it as a waterfowl plant, but does not mean that it is not.

I can't tell exactly which version of the two plants I have. I just sprayed Roundup on a bunch of this by the way I hope I didn't kill a desirable plant?

Is this duck potato or creeping burhead?



There's plenty more of this in my area, just trying to make an opening in front of my blind for some more desirables.

That is duck potato...there are more than one Sagittaria sp. in the Delta. Creeping burhead and water plantain do not have the evident arrow shaped leaf...more oval.
