MS River Boating Question
Anyone ever run a boat similar to the link below in the MS River? More specifically, has anyone ever run a 17-18 foot mudmotor powered boat in the MS River? If so, it is that a bad idea or will a mudmotor of sufficient size be enough to motor safely (relative term on the river I realize) in the MS during the winter months?
Thanks

Re: MS River Boating Question
Those are fine boats, and great timber boats, and would work good on the backwater, but a mudmotor in the actual river-river, is no good. They are slow in that current.

Re: MS River Boating Question
Wow, $18K???? I have run mine across the river a lot. I wouldn't recommend "learning" in it in the river or long hauls in the river. Get something with a closed transom and neutral and reverse, with enough power to get up and out of danger. in short, not that boat.
Re: MS River Boating Question
It would take you a lot longer to get anywhere. Mud motors arent built for that application. Get an outboard
Edited to add- for that price you could get a new 1860 F&F loaded out with a 115. That is ideal riverboat

Re: MS River Boating Question
Me and a buddy of mine run our 1754 war eagles all the time on the river with 50 horse mercs
Would love to have that mud motor to get into some of the places we go.
Lodi has a very nice setup. Hopefully I can come up with the money to buy it.

Re: MS River Boating Question
DO NOT GET AN EXCEL BOAT!!!
I speak from first hand experience, not on just what I have heard. I should have heeded the warning based on what people said about them, but they look so damn sharp. Trust me, looks aren't everything!
With that being said, 30mph is plenty fast enough to navigate the river, not all mudboats are "slow". I would think you may encounter a problem not having reverse, but then again, maybe not...

Re: MS River Boating Question
I hunt the river every year in my boat (1648 custom made w/36hp prodrive) It does just fine. As one of the above post said, join mudmotortalk.com. You will get more info on that type of boat than you ever thought existed.
