few lightening shots from the beach

Postby LawDawg » Tue May 29, 2012 9:23 am

All in all, the weather last week was great, but there was one storm that I got to take advantage of. Like a rookie, however, I forgot my tripod and had to make one out of a cast net, bar stool, ice chest, and towels. For the circumstances I was given, I thought they turned out pretty good.

all these were straight from the camera. no touch up at all. I have no clue why the colors are different on some. My guess is the light created by the lightening made them different.

Amateur question here regarding the focus - how did you get the focus right? What this a manual focus or was this a time with the Fstop was so open that everything was in focus?

Great pictures. Lightning pictures are always pretty cool.

I had the ISO at 100, F-stop up as far as it could go (this allowed for a full fram focus) and I was shooting in AV mode. I would have used bulb had I had a tripod. One of the reasons why they aren't dark is because of hte pier lights. I was shooting 30 second shutter speed and the lights were enough to illuminate everything. That and when the lightening strikes, it puts out enough light to really see the horizon.

here's another one I did with a 10 second exposure I think. It's much easier to do it with long exposures because you don't have to worry about catching the bolt. It you are in a place with a lot of light, you might have a problem.

I think Deagle has some cool ones that he took with relatively quick exposure. I'm not that patient or good.

Great shots! One of my favorite subjects! Oh, and I think you have something on your sensor...or a dead pixel?
