ADS: push mowers

Postby HeKing » Sun May 06, 2012 6:55 pm

I'm going to have to buy a new mower when I get to TX. I want something that will last a while. What do you guys recommend?

Got a Honda blackmax from sams in 2010. Never pulled more than twice to start. I don't use the bagger, can't speak to how good it is.

i've got a John Deere js63 walk behind that is still running strong (bought in '00), but it is 22" cut so it takes a few passes to cover a decent sized yard...i was quite envious of my neighbors honda, though. much more quiet and the variable speed is really nice - you set the pace instead of the mower setting the pace.

From my visits to texas, you just need a pump sprayer and some round up to kill the weeds between the rocks...were'nt much "grass" to speak of!

Whatever you get dont make the mistake of getting a self propelled front wheel drive! It will not cut it! I have a snapper and love it. Grew up using a Deere. They do not make them like they used to, and I believe their self propelled are slower than most. You cant go wrong with a Honda. I have only see and heard good things with them, but I wouldnt trade my snapper for anything.

The main thing to look for is a good engine. Honda, Briggs and Stratton, and Kohler are my picks. Self propelled mowers are nice, but can also be just one more thing to break down. That being said, I have had my self propelled for about 8 years and haven't had a minute's trouble out of it.

the new deere's are crap especially the box store brands such as lowes or home depot. Last mower I bought was from walmart with a honda engine on it. Had it 5 years now with no problems. Hell I haven't even changed the oil in it yet. sharpen the blade every year and cut grass and I only paid $150 for it.

Walmart special here going on its 8th season. MTD with a Briggs engine and I think it was $100. Never changed the oil and never used a fuel treatment. It spent the first five years of its life stored outside under a picnic table. It cranks on the 3rd pull every March and on the 2nd pull every Saturday until October. After all that being said, I will probably never get it to crank again.....
