Sunflower dove field

Postby Deadeye » Thu Apr 26, 2012 11:32 am

Who has planted? I'm planting this weekend and hopefully get get a good rain next week. I planted Clearfield last year only to have the June/July drought to severly affect yield. To top it off, got 11 inches of rain on opening weekend last year thanks to Tropical storm Lee. I hope this year turns out better for my dove field.

Between herbicide and fertilizer, dove field = $$$$

I have planted. I think that the Clearfields arent' very popular this year. Everyone said the same thing from last year, very tall with a small head(don't want that reputation), so I'm trying something different this year. The chemical that you apply with Clearfield is comparable to buying diamonds by the ounce in cost, and does not work by my experiences last year. Have them in the ground, just need a little showa now. Hope all is well Dead.

I have sunflowers heading out already. Volunteers from last year. I haven't planted yet. I target May 1-10 because I have a severe blackbird infestation every August-November. I've seen em eat 50% of my seed in early August before I ever mow any.

How deep do you plant sunflowers?

I tried a few seeds around a few spots in my yard and nothing came up. Planted them about 1/2" deep.

Seems the money to plant and grow sunflowers has become a losing proposition at least in parts of the delta. With corn cut in August, rice cut or being cut opening weekend, blackbirds, and an inability to have several good weekend hunts during either of the 2 early seasons, our group has opted to save that money. Thinking about trying millet or milo instead.

 Boy I walked right into that one.

I try not to plant sunflowers deeper than an inch or inch .5. They have a hard time coming up from deep. If you don't have adequate SOIL moisture at an inch (one, knuckle), wait for rain then plant afterwards is what I do.
