Fire Ant Killer

Postby bigoak » Mon Mar 19, 2012 10:14 am

This topic usually comes up every year. What is everyone using to get rid of fire ants in the yard? What is safe for pets?

termidor (fipronil) is a great one for spot treating, talstar (bifinate) is pretty good, and realitivly cheap. Phantom is another good one, as is viper

Pour 1-16 or 32oz. bottle of liquid Dawn dishwashing detergent (or the dollar store brand) in a 5 gallon bucket then fill the rest with water. Then just pour directly into the mound. Works great and it's safe.

Have done this for years and it does seem to work quite well (I read about it many moons ago). If you have multiple mounds, let's say 3 mounds (A,B and C) - take part of A and place on B. Part of B on C - and part of C on A. Seems like they will cannibalize each other.

Nothing will ever grow again in that spot if you use gas. If you are going to use gas, just buy the poison instead. Using gas is just absurd and expensive.

Going to be a bad year with that soft winter, more mounds in my yard than I've ever seen. Going to try one of those home depot type granulars applied to entire yard. Maybe get rid of more than ants and, in doing so, maye get rid of mole food source too.
