Im a lab guy! although they do need a good bit of attention. We have a small female jack russel that is a blast to have in the house. She will sit in your lap all day long, or fetch a ball all day long, what ever your doing, she will do it. shes about 8 or 9 now and weighs about 11 - 12 pounds, but act like she can take out my 100+ plus lab. catches and kills squirlls regularly in our back yard.

Another good dog is a blue heeler, smart as can be, and very loyal and will hardly leave the yard, and very protective!

I got my kids an American Eskimo. There are 3 different sizes (toy, miniature, and standard) and the one I got will only get to be 15-18 lbs. They are extremely good with kids, playful, smart, and will look after their home. They have a great personality as well.

One you don't hear often is Airedale. Very family friendly, does not shed and great for protection. Minimal health problems and loves kids. Very gritty dog and won't back up from intruder. They also don't shed hair every where. only need to be groomed a coupla times a year.

In my opinion there is no better dog than a Dane! A lot bigger than mid size, but they think they are smaller. GREAT with kids!!! Great peace of mind with such a big dog in the house. Very minimal shedding.

Daschund or a English Bulldog if you can afford it. I always wanted one but I can't see spending that much on a house pet.
