Gun Decision

Postby ScottS » Mon Jul 30, 2001 8:50 pm

I know this is a loaded question but bear with me on this.

The scenario is that you have money to buy a new auto loader. Your choices are:

1) Remington 11-87 3.5" Super Magnum
2) Winchester 3.5" Super X2
3) Baretta AL390 3" Magnum
4) Buy a new Remington 3" steel barrel for your current 2.75" 1100.

What is your choice and what are your opinions on these options?

Thanks guys!

Here are some questions to answer:

(1) Do you really need a 3.5" gun to duck hunt with???

(2) Do you want a gun that will consistently cycle out any shells imaginable???

You don't need the 3.5 unless you goose hunt, and if you want a gun that will not jam, hang up, lock up, then your best choice would be the Beretta AL390.

GH22

Answer to #1 - I don't need a 3.5" to hunt ducks but I would like to start shooting geese in the near future (north alabama). While I might shoot 3" 99% of the time, the option of a 3.5" shell is the draw to that gun.

Answer to #2 - I have always loved and wanted a Beretta. Finally, with the Wally World gun they are in my price range. That is a HUGE pull for me right now.

Here's the pricest that I know:

Rem 11-87 3.5" $750, jammomatic in cold temp
Beretta AL390 3" $530
Win Super X2 3.5" $685

The SuperX2 will cycle all shells, the only 3.5 that will consistently do it. I had two buddies that went and bought two rem 11-87 SP 3.5" before dove season and are wishing they hadn't bought them, will not cycle out light load shells and some heavy loads.

If you do not need a 3.5" gun, I would buy a Beretta 390 and be done with it.

If you need a 3.5" gun, be advised that there are very few of them that will reliably cycle light loads (even up to 2.75 dram 32 gram loads with some guns). The Remington will not do the light stuff, a SBE will not, and a BGH/SX2 may or may not. My BGH 3.5 (which is the same as a SX2) will reliably cycle 7/8 loads (as DD will attest since I shoot close shots at tournaments with them) but those guns are big time finicky about cycling shells that do not have a radius crimp because every now and then one with a bulge at the crimp will hang on the detent for the extractor. This eliminates most of the cheap imported shells like PMC, etc, and leaves you with shooting good domestic shells only. There just is not a "do it all" 3.5" gun on the market.

In the non-3.5" division, nothing ever built will touch a 390 right now. The Super 90 is also a good choice if you are into recoil guns.

Appreciate it guys.....I guess it will be the Wally-World Beretta 390. I plan to sell my 2.75" Remington 1100 instead of buying the replacement 3.5" steel barrel. I've always wanted a Beretta so now is my chance to own one.

Again, I appreciate the experiences and advice. Trusting you guys may not be the smartest thing I've ever done but I guess you DO know a few things about guns.

MSU Duck Dawg, if you are coming to starkville to get the gun, we'll hook up with Anitidae and go shoot at the Gun Club.

Thanks for the offer GH22! I'm going to check locally first as I think I saw a 390 in a local Wally-Mart for $529.95 (or something like that). I'll be on the river this weekend checking out the War Eagle boat I've bought and checking over the duck holes. If I get the gun it might be a couple of weeks.

What was the price on the gun in Starkville?
