I don't think it affects their sense of smell at all. My dog is inside 90% of the time and has one of the best noses I've ever seen on a retriever. It's next to nothing for him to take out on a 100 yard completely blind trail through the woods and come back with the duck.

Guys with the Filson vest, is this the one you are using? It's the only one that I see that doesn't have orange on it. I bought a Franchi 720 a couple years back with the intentions of my wife shooting skeet with it. It has become my go-to dove gun and I duck hunt with it pretty regular as well. It's a great shooting gun, and I haven't had any problems out of it.

When we went to pick out our lab pup, I went with the fattest one that just happened to come over and sit down right at my feet while we were watching them play in the yard. Turned out to be a pretty good pick for me.

Lakeway had some when I was in there a couple weekends ago.
