One simple measure to get the right sprocket is to measure the circumference of the wheel with a string and see how many seeds it puts out in one full rotation. If you know how far apart you want the seeds to be you can figure out your sprocket using this trial and error method.

It sure can. Try a good, high pressure day after a front comes through. Those are usually my best days. Should have some of those coming up.

I am not a vet, but I sleep with one nightly and I can tell you that I have heard her make this same recommendation more than once. I think she also recommends plenty of rest and kennel time with or without surgery. Sounds like you have made a wise choice.
