Re: Any suggestions?

Are you near any retriever clubs? Attend a training day or maybe get up with some of the guys near you that do train. The problem will be your technique. Dogs need to understand that there is consequences for disaobeying a known command. Evidently yours does not.

Re: puppy vs. started lab

Beginning price around $2500. Minimum requirements should be OB, CC and FF. Seasoned level dogs will start around $4500. Advanced training to make double retrieves, and simple blind retrieves.

Re: Force fetch?

"My dog is ff. I understand it. Look deaper."
Interesting comment. Care to give us further understanding?

Not only FF but I also want my hunting retriever to handle. Saves a lot of walking for me.

Re: Force fetch?

I will have to disagree with the comment concerning FF and hunting. When hunting I want my dog to reliably pick up whatever I shoot, on command, and successfully return it to me. That's FF. Just another part of being a complete hunting retriever.

We will have you sitting on a stump. Got me a big bag or red flags and my dogs will not give a bird to anyone but me. You will have to behave this time.

Re: Force fetch?

I start "Hold" with my hand in a leather glove. I put my hand in the dog's mouth and command "Hold". Using my hand in this manner gives me far greater feel when the dog is trying to spit out my hand. I can also control the spitting out better, not allowing the dog to spit out my ...

Re: Breeding

Exercise Induced Collapse. Dogs that are of the afected status can collapse from exercise and not just because the execise was excessive.
There is a genetic marker that indicates if the dog is a carrier or affected.

Re: I guess some dogs have "it" and some don't....

Believe it or not...this sitution is quite common. The dog has to "figure out" hunting. There is no way to truly simulate a hunting. One of my very best hunting retrievers was gunshy as all get out the first three times out. To the point that he began whining and trying to escape when I be...

Re: so, I have this dog....

I hunt my dogs exactly the way I would ask them to perform at a weekend hunt test. I want to maintain the same standards during hunting that I encounter when at a hunt test. I can fully understand handling to the downwind side of a bird IF you do not know where the bird is but if you know then you s...

Re: Keep us in your thoughts....

So sorry Jeff. It really hits hard since I have known her since she was a pup. From a past experience, the hard road is normally the best for everyone. Regretfully, I let one go down hard because it was too tough for me to let go.
Prayers for you and Lacey.

Re: help with a e collar

Quite the opposite reaction than you might expect. Training is no fun for dogs that have been corrected a bunch. Usually hunting they will really pick it up.
Any negative experiences while hunting tha the dog may associate with?
