The nationwide crippling rate is 20%, is it not? One bird lost for every 4 brought to blind?

That's correct. It's the general, long-established crippling rate used by the USFWS to convert the "Harvest Rate" (as reported by hunters via band-recoveries) to the "Kill Rate". Obviously, there is a ...

The study is flawed. They should have removed the SWD from the spread when off.

All controlled studies are flawed to some extent. None of us change something in our hunting back and forth with the clock; that's not realistic. But a scientific study does so (and accepts the loss of "reality") to ...

1.9 TIMES MORE LIKELY THAN WHAT? WHAT IS THAT 10%?

I can understand how it can be a little confusing because the paper didn't include much of the raw data. They tell us, for example, that ducks killed per hour was 5 times higher with spinner "on" compared to spinner "off" on MARSH hunts, but ...

I don't know, Duckmen. A few years back, the US Fish and Wildlife Service was found to have made some grants of Pittman-Robertson money to an anti-hunting organization under the guise of "Education" (which is a legal use for PR funds). So as outlandish as USFWS money going to build a tennis complex ...

Ditto the "good post" sentiments, Ole Bufflehead.

I had my fill long ago of unsubstantiated bashing of ANY organization, but DU does seem to get an inordinate amount of attention. However, I had to participate in this thread because of the NAWCA reference and the false implication that DU was ...

Promulgate - to make known by public declaration

Y'all can ask any of the old-timers around here how much of a politician I am. But why don't you use your head, and find out from the Katy Prairie Conservation Association, Texas Parks and Wildlife, about 600 private landowners in Texas (Texas ...

Don't lose focus

I see that the same old misconceptions, creative interpretations, and complete falsehoods continue to be bantered around regarding DU .... too bad.

Too bad, because the topic of this thread was NAWCA. The North American Wetland Conservation Act has been a major source of revenue for implementing ...

HIP survey questions skipped?

Well, it's more common than it should be. What happened is the clerk answered the first question, "Did you hunt migratory birds last year" for you by typing in "NO". That way, she didn't have to ask you all the other questions, it saved her time and effort, and made the line move faster if there was ...

Feeding Ducks in Yankee Land

Last year there was a similar report from NE Louisiana about a "Waste Grain Dispersal Program", except in that report, it was Ducks Unlimited that was responsible. The hunter that contacted me even said there was a DU sign near the field where those payments were made to the farmer for inefficiently ...

Ducks or BS?

I just got an e-mail with the survey data for Missouri flown 12/10/2001

The counted a total of 595,800 mallards in the state with most of them in NW and N. Central parts of the state. A little over 100,000 were counted in the southeastern portion.

shooting hens ?

Hey Travis,

I don't know the proportion of hens that would be effected by the later season. Some harvest data collected by the state of Mississippi seemed to show a rather constant kill from 12/12 through the end of Jan. in 1998/99 .... about 30,000 mallards killed 12/12-12/21 and about 34,000 ...

Shotgun Patterning

Hey men,

When you pattern a shotgun, DON'T draw your circles before you shoot. If you do, and you don't perfectly center your pattern, your data will not be representative. Patterning is not to evaluate your ability to hit a particular spot, but to evaluate the quality of the pattern from your gun ...
