Building a hunting cabin questions

We are looking into building a cabin at the hunting place that is on the edge of a flood zone - we will have to raise by dirt or poles. Nothing too fancy but not too rustic. Can anyone give me information as to any of this: 1. Foundation - slab v. conventional v. raised on poles - costs/advantages/e...

Re: WRP Question

Accidentally ran across this looking for something else -> Dan/Ramsey/anyone else know of any timber management steps having been made as to WRP properties? Thanks.

Re: Big Muddy prediction of 51.5 feet

I’m not able to find historical data on backwater/landside flooding levels. Do any of you have that or links to that information? And/or maps of what is under water at what levels (have found some estimates from 2011 on those). Thanks.

Wetland or upland in MS Delta

Can anyone give me a description of what would be considered the difference in wetland and upland in the Mississippi Delta as far as being able to build a cabin on the site? My understanding is that you cannot build in wetlands, but is that elevation/vegetation/other? Thanks.

Re: High MS River & Season Closure

I believe they shut down the south Delta to deer hunting in 2016 when the Steele Bayou landside gauge reached 90’. It’s at 86.87’ right now, but I cannot find a forecast crest.

Re: Ask DS -> killing yellowjackets

No interesting report - Gatorade bottle full of gasoline, 10:30 pm, poured in hole, nothing happened, today there were no little devils flying around. Easy as could be.

Ask DS -> killing yellowjackets

What is the best way to kill yellowjackets? The nest in the ground is fairly accessible. Gas, malathion, permethrin, spray/foam, other? I think I'll pass on the soap and water. Thanks.

What are the farming rental rates of Delta bean land?

What is the approximate amount of rent on south Delta low/bean land: (a) percent of crop left in field and (2) $$/acre? Farmer does everything/landowner gives access. Thanks. Edit to add -> no idea on rating/AAA; there is a 14" well, but land not formed for irrigation; low as in was bean fields...

Ask DS -> Electric fence around food plot

We are planning to plant corn and install an electric fence around the plot to hopefully keep deer/hogs out of it.

Who has installed an electric fence for a food plot in the past? Has it worked? What brand? Any suggestions? Any helpful hints?

Thanks.

Wingman has some aerial photos of the flooding on his Facebook page if anyone is interested in looking and you know who he is.

Re: CWD found in MS delta.

I can’t really tell from that map, but it looks like it is in the area that has flooded a couple times in the last few years. Add to that that the deer was 4.5 years old and CWD has incubation of multiple years - it has already been further concentrated due to the flooding, maybe a couple times.

Re: WRP and Duck Species

Our WRP hydrology units seem to be poorly conceived and rarely hold any ducks - if they do have ducks, the most I've ever seen is a dozen or two. We have several of these areas with the largest being about 4 acres. The trees were planted in 2003. As with yours, they will only hold rainwater and are ...

Turning pumps on

Have you already turned on the water, or if not, when do you plan to do so? I think we will turn ours on by the end of the week and flood one area and wait on other areas.

Re: Little help please.. how far do

Generally, counties (and cities that annexed new property after 1981) cannot have ordinances that allow for shorter distances than: (1) use a shotgun or bow on at least 10 acres and not within 150 feet of another’s house and in a manner not reasonably expected to shoot onto another’s property; or (2...
