How to play an old School Turpin or Stribling

I killed my first turkey on Ashbrook Island near Greenville in the fall of1976. My turkey mentor was an original member of Ashbrook. As soon as WW II was over, he got an original Tom Turpin Shortbox from Tom himself in Menphis and a fool proof Lynch box. He told me one day they will come to the YipY...

A Special Turkey Call

I have been working on this call for a while! My son Kirk has a fair collection of my turkey calls. He never has much time to hunt Turkeys, so I collaborated with Kelly Pucket in South Carolina to put some special artwork on one of my Turpins. I just got it back. She captured some memories of Straps...

Never too early to pick up a duck call.

Christmas, After telling my 3 year old grandson what a duck sounded like, I blew one of my duck calls and handed it to him. Needless to say the ensuing sound from both grandson's prompted a move 30 miles down the road to YAZOO wildlife refuge. I don't think the ducks leaving Dodge knew what to think...

Introduced to the Sculling Paddle

Introduced to the Sculling Paddle Just saw where blgros1 on here asked if the Ark hole busting pair were introduced to the Sculling Paddle? When I saw that remark it reminded me of a story that the late great duck call maker and duck hunter, Mr. Jimmy Riddell once told me about the sculling paddle.....

"Baby It's Cold Outside"

Sitting here listening to a crackling fire and James Taylor's "Baby It's Cold Outside" reminded me of my coldest hunt in 2010. The High this day was 8 degrees and you can tell from the picture of a Mississippi River Chute that everything was frozen but the River itself. This picture of my ...

Interest for a Mr. E

I have been thinking of doing a few calls like the original Jimmy Riddell on the left. This is the call that I purchased from Mr. Jimmy in 1967. He used this call as his personal call from 1962 - 1964. It has been my go to call ever since. Mr. Jimmy took me under his wing about that time and showed ...

This one is Honduran Mahogany with a chatoyancy over Saluda Co., SC - Crotch Pecan. Thanks for...
